They are good words that Os shares from his heart intertwined with the Scriptures--in our case several times a week (we'll get to daily eventually--maybe until then we should call it Tentmakers 'Weekly or so' Inspiration !). Agree or not agree, you come away with the knowledge that this is a man whose heart "follows hard after God" as should all of us.  But let me know what think ye. Discovering the Source of Problems
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Friday, September 19 2008

"After that, God answered prayer in behalf of the land." 2 Samuel 21:14b

During the reign of David, there was a famine in the land for three successive years. So David sought the Lord regarding this famine, "Why is there famine on this land?" The Lord answered David, "It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death" (2 Sam. 21:1b).

Years earlier, Joshua made a peace treaty with the Gibeonites. This, too, was an act of disobedience. When God called Israel to come into the Promised Land, they were to destroy all the enemies of God. Joshua failed to see through the ruse of deception when the Gibeonites portrayed themselves as travelers. The Israelites signed a peace treaty only to discover who the Gibeonites were after the fact. Now, they had to honor the treaty. However, this led to intermarriages and much sorrow for Israel. Years later, Saul made a decision to kill the Gibeonites.

The nation was now receiving the punishment for their sin of disobedience through a famine. David knew that famines could have a spiritual source, so he inquired of God and God answered. The source was Saul's murder of the Gibeonites. Once David knew the source of the problem, he took action. He repented on behalf of the nation and made restitution. The famine was then lifted.

Do you have a problem that seems to be a continually unresolved issue? Have you asked God to tell you the reason for the problem? It may have a spiritual root that is still unresolved with God. He may be allowing this pressure to bring attention to an issue He wants you to take care of. Ask the Lord today to give you revelation on your problem. As a loving Father, He desires to make known anything that stands in the way of fellowship between you and Him. However, His righteousness must always be upheld.

                                                                           ###

Unresolved Issues un Your Life?

The most preciousj thing in life, outside of our salvation, is a clear conscience.

The hymn writer was correct when he penned, "Nothing Between my soul and my Savior..." Where our Lord has placed you and me, this very second (amidst all the economic upheaval going on presently) is where we must bloom (as in 'bloom where you're planted'). I remember the entire morning Bill Gothard used to spend in his Basic Youth Conflicts seminar on a clear conscience. (Too bad I waited so long  in my life!)

All problems have a spiritual root.  I am not saying that because one doesn't have any money, one isn't spiritual.  A clear conscience has nothing to do with money. And if bad things happen to good people, it doesn't mean they are doing something out of the Lord's will.  Our Lord uses both problems and opportunities to get our attention.  He then uses them as a direction-finder, a correction (spanking) in our life, a skill-builder, a relationship-builder and the 'ultimate' in self-improvement courses!

It hurts me to see professing Christians living together outside of marriage, for example.  It hurts our Lord even worse. If we are not concerned about upholding and building our own reputation, we must be concerned about upholding the Lord's.

---In other fronts...I am still working on that prayer I am praying (kind of an offshoot of the Prayer of Jabez)...here is my latest version.

O that You would bless me indeed and grant me increasing productivity spiritually, financially and in my relationships to Your eternal praise, honor and glory and the lifting up of the Lord Jesus Christ so that Lynda and I might be benefited along with the rest of our family, the saints locally and the saints around the world. For it is in Jesus' precious Name I ask and thank You. Amen.

It is a prayer like that that causea me to increase in fear and trembling, because I know when the Lord chooses to answer it, then the 'problems' will come--for His eternal glory--and my own spiritual congruency with His will.  Look at what a huge standard I (and any of you who are joiining me) am praying myself into.  Do you see that there is no way you and I can achieve this in our own efforts--both before AND after the request is being answered?

Calling by Name
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Sunday, September 14 2008

"These were the chiefs among Esau's descendants: The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau: Chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz." Genesis 36:15

God is big on giving meaning to names. Names often are specific indicators of God's plans and purposes for that individual. A young boy grew up as Moses' servant. His Hebrew name, Hoshea, means "salvation." As the lad grew, Moses could see that he had a "different spirit" from the rest of the Hebrew men. He was selected to be one of the 12 men whom Moses chose to spy out the land of Canaan. Before the expedition, Hoshea was given a new name by Moses-Joshua, which means "the Lord saves." Joshua became the new leader of Israel who would lead them into the Promised Land. He would, in fact, save an entire nation.

In my own journey I had learned that God gave me a name that had something to do with my future call from Him. I was 44 years old and had just gone through two of the most difficult years of my life. During that time, God brought a man into my life who discipled me in areas where I had never been trained. I was discovering many new spiritual truths about myself and Christians in the workplace. I came to identify with the struggles of Esau and Joseph in their desire to understand their own birthrights.

I began to write about these discoveries to help other workplace believers understand their own callings through business. One morning on a weekend getaway in the mountains, my friend looked at me and said, "Do you know the meaning of 'Omar'?"

Omar is my first name. My real name is Omar Smallwood Hillman III. Dr. Smallwood had delivered my grandfather. No one, not even my mother, knew the origin of "Omar." They put the "O" and the "S" together to call me "Os." "You need to know the meaning of 'Omar.' It has something to do with your future," said my friend.

Startled by his assertion, that night I looked up the name of "Omar" on a computer program. Here is what I found:

Arabic for "first son" and "disciple," Hebrew for "gifted speaker," and German for "famous." Rooted in the Middle East, this name is rarely used in the West. Omar was the grandson of Esau. [http://www2.parentsoup.com/babynames/baby/o.html]

I was shocked. I had just completed 300 pages of material on the relationship of Christian businessmen to the life of Esau. My friend quickly concluded that God had called me to free Christian businessmen and women from the "Esau life." And He had allowed me to receive a name that related to the person of Esau. It was the closest thing to a burning bush experience I'd ever had.

Could the Lord be this personal with us? Yes, Matthew 10:30 tells us He knows the very hairs of our head.

                                                                                          ###

Do You Know the Meaning of Your Name?

So many parents today slap a name on a newbord's head without thinking through any implications the name will have on him in later life. But as Os has shared with us, we know our Lord is intimately acquainted with us and involved in our lives.

In our local Sunday paper this morning, there is a front page article of how several in business are thriving and not just surviving in today's 'slow' economy. Two were solid Christians (who gave the Lord credit for their success)--a jeweler and a chaft shop--who were investing several hundred thousand dollars in their expansions.

The jeweler, for years a prominent member of the business community in our area, gave his late father, the founder of the business, credit for depending on the Lord.

Over the last 35 years of working with business owners, I have found that those who not only knew their employees name but the names of their families --to any degree--were the most productive in business--even if they had several thousand employees.

It works at church, the Chamber and with your extended family as well. You have heard it before:  the sweetest sound to a human being is the sound of their name. God knew that from the beginning! Learn a new person's name today, ok?

The Spiritual Realm
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, September 10 2008

"So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind. 1 Corinthians 14:15

How real is the spiritual realm? My lawyer friend from Nigeria tells a personal story of how he was preparing for an important case. He knew that he must be prepared to argue five separate points. He was to appear before his country's supreme court, so it was a very important case.

As he neared the time in which he was to go to court, he began to pray about how he was to argue the case. He spent much time in legal preparation and intercessory prayer. As he went to court, the Spirit spoke to him and said, "Do not argue point one, point two, point three, or point four. Only argue point five." Imagine my friend's struggle of faith. If he were reading this wrong, the shame and professional fallout would be devastating.

The time had come to present the case before the judge when my friend said, "Judge, I wish to withdraw points one through four. I wish to argue only point five." The opposing counsel stood up and objected. "Your honor, he cannot do that!" "Objection overruled, counsel," said the judge.

My friend went on to present his case around point five only, and then sat down. When the opposing counsel stood to present his case, he stood speechless for 12 minutes. He could not get a word out of his mouth. He finally mumbled a few words and complained to the judge that he was going to have to yield. It seems that the opposing counsel had prepared to argue only points one through four, but failed to prepare for point five. The judge ruled in favor of my friend.

The unseen Lord wants to help us in the physical realm of our work life. We must acknowledge His presence and tap into this incredible resource He has given to each of us. Seek Him today and ask Him to reveal His perfect plan for you this day.

Opinions vs. Core Values

Today is the seventh anniversary of 9/11.  To all of us in the USA--and to much of the world--we remember what we were doing--in some cases precisely--the moment we heard the news of the terriorists slashing throats of pilots and crashing planes into buildings. All of us, it seems, have our own 9/11 story.

We also have an election coming up. It sounds trite, but this election really is one of the most critical in Americ's history. You see, on one side of the presidential argument, you see core values clashing with core values. The core values of the terrorists enabled them to have no trouble at all giving their life for what they believed in. One simply does not give one's life over 'opinions'.

One set of core values was met with another set of core values and the USA went to war over it--to take out their side before they take out our side.

On the other side of the elections, we have opionions wanting to take on core values. In a matchup like this, core values wins every time. Because one side in our election struggle really has no core values, or shifting values at best, they will opt to 'sway' the other core values side ( there really is no such thing as an enemy--only people WE do not understand) to their opinions and way of thinking through their great intellect and powers of persuasion and irrefutable reasoning.

We see the success of this opinionated reasoning side bearing much 'success' in today's society. "Look Frank, there is a poor misunderstood man with a gun wanting to take everything we own.  Let's explain to him that we really mean him no harm. Why, let's even offer to buy him dinner and a new coat! He will surely see the error of his ways."

"Come now and let us REASON together..."

Moving With the Cloud
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, September 03 2008

"Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out." Numbers 9:21b

God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, and they had to pass through the desert on their way to the Promised Land. God was their guide by means of a cloud that appeared overhead. When it moved, they moved. When it stopped, they stopped - sometimes a day, a week, even a year.

Imagine living with the uncertainty of this situation. One day you work at getting your "house" in order, only to have to pick up the stakes and move. Your ability to plan is totally gone. But even greater is the temptation to move when the cloud did not move because you felt it was time to move. For the Israelites, perhaps the grass was no longer green. Perhaps the water was not easily accessible. Perhaps the bugs were a problem. Whatever the case, they were strictly prohibited from moving if the cloud did not move.

It is still the same today. We are not to move unless the Holy Spirit instructs us to do so. We are not to make that business deal on the basis of whether or not it makes sense, but on the leading of the Holy Spirit's "cloud" in our life. It is a difficult process to move only when we are directed, and to remain if we are not.

The pressure is always upon us to move, to plan, to act. But if we act, we may move into a place where the presence of God may not be. Hence, the rub. The Christian workplace believer must learn to move when God says move; it is a sign of complete surrender and dependence on God's Spirit to direct our steps.

Ask God today if you are sitting under His cloud. Or, have you moved when He said stand still? He will show you.

A Dangerous Prayer Request?

A business decision is usually made by a) gathering all the facts; b) pritorizing them in the light of the forthcoming decision; c) making sure the decision is right for the company or individual's revenue growth, strategic plan and so forth.

Everything is based (or in the Tentmaker's life, prayed toward) is this going to benefit me or my company. Right?  What's wrong with that, you ask. Nothing as long as you know deep in your heart Who's going to reap the real benefit.  Let me proffer a prayer request that may be dangerous to some, right on target to others.

"O gracious Lord, I pray that You would grant me and my family full financial relief from the regular stress and strain that comes from regular living expenses such as rent/mortgage, car insurance to dental and schooling and so forth. I pray this in order for You to fill me with Your vision for my life so that I would have no excuses to be wholly and completely obedient to Your call--in and through my business and my life. In Jesus' Name I pray--with eternity's values in view--Amen."

Want to join me? Let me hear from you! You may have to tweak it to fit you. This is a spin-off of The Pray of Jabed in a little more modern flair.

Best of His grace,
Steve

A Key Devotional for Today's Workplace Warriors

This is a little different. I want to have my comments at the start rather than at the end of today's devotional. This is such a critical item for us in the workplace, my prayer is that you will spend some time with our Lord after you read it.

Larbor Day and the first of September, especially back in my go-go days of business,  always marked the time we asked our clients to put aside thinking and planning time to see how congruent the business plan we made at the start of the year was being realized. July 4th was another time when we checked how the short, medium and long-range goals were coming along.

The key is to allow the Holy Spirit to check ourselves over for 'any besetting sin' that would keep us from our own success. Check it out! Let me know.

Faithfulness to Convict
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Monday, September 01 2008

"When He comes, He will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment." John 16:8

I had recently come back from a mountaintop experience. As I attempted to get back into my routine, I found a great cloud of oppression come over me. Each day I attempted to press through it, but with no success. Fear, anxiety, doubt, and unbelief were setting in. I knew I was fretting over my future.

I had been in a long period of transition in my work life and was tired of the place of waiting. Yet I didn't understand the oppression. It was definitely spiritual warfare. That night I was reading a book regarding our calling from God. The author made mention that we can become envious of others when we get into a place where we are dissatisfied. Suddenly, I realized I was guilty of envying where other workplace believers were in their lives. I was "subconsciously" angry that the calling God had placed on my life had such adversity. I had to repent.

As if this were not enough, the next day the Holy Spirit confirmed my assessment in the most unusual way. That morning I turned on my computer to read my own Workplace Meditation that is sent to my computer. The message was on "Envying Others" and included the same Scripture reference as the author's in the book. Imagine God using my own words to convict me of sin! The nerve of Him! To make matters worse, at lunchtime I tuned into the local Christian radio station to hear an interview with the same author as he cited the very passage I had read the day before. I was shocked to realize how the Holy Spirit could be so precise in His ability to convict and give proof of His activity in my life.

Do you question if the Holy Spirit is active in your life? The Lord has promised that the Holy Spirit will convict us of sin when we move away from Him. It is His responsibility as our guide.

Going Against the Flow
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Friday, August 29 2008

"But the whole assembly talked about stoning them."
Numbers 14:10a

Have you ever had to stand up against the majority for a cause that wasn't popular? God brought the Israelites out of Egypt and promised He would lead them into a land of milk and honey. The process of moving out of Egypt was difficult. They could no longer do things the old way, for the old ways didn't work in the desert. God provided for them during this journey. But there came a point in which the people forgot what God had said. Their discomfort changed their belief about God.

Whenever God is slow to answer our prayers, what we believe about God is revealed. Do we change our plans and move in a different direction when pressure mounts? Or do we continue on the path God has directed for us? Four men believed what God said and were willing to stand; however, the crowd wanted to stone them.

Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them." But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the Lord appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites (Numbers 14:5-10).

Notice Joshua and Caleb's response to the situation. They had spied the land. They believed God. They challenged the crowd. They seemed to know that if the Lord was not pleased with them they would not enter into the Promised Land. Those who grumbled did not enter the Promised Land. Only Joshua and Caleb and a new generation saw the fulfillment of God's promise.

Has God called you to stand for a cause bigger than yourself? You will have opposition to His call; sometimes it even comes from those in your own camp. But if God has called you, then you can be sure He will make a way. He has already opened the way before you. But you must walk in faith, joined with Him to take the land. "...Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go" (Joshua 1:9).
                                                                      ###

Or do you try not to listen to the Lord?

My parents, as I am sure yours, often would tell me something like, "You might have to stand alone when you see your freiends agree more with the world."

I know I listened but many times did not obey--because it was just too hard. As I look back over the last 40+ years of my adult life, I see that I have paid a very high price because it was actually the Lord's voice I did not obey.

How many times as business owners have we said, "If I would have followed my gut on this or that business decision, I would be sitting pretty right now.  But I simply wanted to play it safe--or it was too much work."

What are you working on that the Lord has put in your way for you to do?  What should you be working on right now?  Don't put it off, my friend. Eternity is much closer than we think.  While the Bible tells us there will be no sadness in heaven, I  can't help but think there may be some regret--if only I would have obeyed and done X.  What we 'loose on earth' sticks with us throughout eternity. What could we pray with you about concerning this?

Warmest regards,

Steve

True Repentance in a Nation
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Monday, August 25 2008

"When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his robes."
            --2 Chronicles 34:19

Josiah was a godly king in Israel. However, before he came to power, the nation had fallen into all kinds of evil. One man, Manasseh, had brought the nation to a condition of inexorable evil. God finally had enough.

"Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such disaster on Jerusalem and Judah that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle. I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plumb line used against the house of Ahab. I will wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down" (2 Kings 21:12-13).

Josiah came into power just before this judgment. He began to clean up the evil by burning all the idolatrous temples, ridding prostitution and homosexuality from the streets, and destroying occult shrines. He did this without the benefit of even reading God's Word, but through the Holy Spirit working in his heart. Then one day the ancient Scriptures were discovered in the temple that had lain dormant for years. They had a profound impact on King Josiah.

When the king heard the words of the Law, he tore his robes. He gave these orders to Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, Shaphan the secretary and Asaiah the king's attendant: "Go and inquire of the Lord for me and for the remnant in Israel and Judah about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the Lord's anger that is poured out on us because our fathers have not kept the word of the Lord; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written in this book" (2 Chronicles 34:19-21).

Josiah was broken. He tore his robes in repentance. He fell to his knees and repented for the wickedness of his nation. He stood in the gap, and God honored Josiah; however, it wasn't enough. God still had to judge the nation for its previous wickedness under the reign of Manasseh.

"Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before God when you heard what He spoke against this place and its people, and because you humbled yourself before Me and tore your robes and wept in My presence, I have heard you, declares the Lord. Now I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place and on those who live here." ...

(2 Chronicles 34:27-28).

God spared Josiah during his reign, but after he died judgment came upon the nation.

No nation is immune from God's judgment. Pray for your nation today. Pray that your nation will have a repentant heart among the leaders and the people.

God's Recruitment Strategy for Leaders
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Sunday, August 24 2008

"Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing." Acts 9:8a

When God calls one His servants into service, there is often much travail. There are many examples where God makes His presence known through circumstances that tax the individual to his very soul.

Consider Paul, who was stricken blind on the Damascus road.

Consider Peter; when he denied Jesus after the crucifixion, he was in total despair.

Consider Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were thrown into the fiery furnace.

Consider Daniel, who was thrown into the lions' den.

Consider David, who was forced to flee his former employer for many years and lived as a fugitive.

It may seem strange to us that God uses such incredible adversity to prepare His servants for greater service, but this is God's way. God knows that the human heart is incapable of voluntarily stepping into situations that take us beyond our comfort zone. He intentionally brings us into hard places to prove us and to drive us deeper into the soil of His grace.

In arid regions of the world, trees cannot survive unless their roots grow deeper to where the water table can be found. Once they reach the water, these trees become stronger than any tree that can be found in tropical climates. Their root systems ensure that they can withstand any storm. In the same way, God brings us into extremely difficult situations in order to prove His power and drive our spiritual roots deeper.

Friend, God may take you through times when you will question His love for you. In such times, you must cling to His coattail so that you see His purposes in it. Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.

"You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised. For in just a very little while, 'He who is coming will come and will not delay. But My righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him'" (Hebrews 10:36-38).

Overcoming All Odds
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Tuesday, August 19 2008

..."Because you have prayed to Me...." Isaiah 37:21

Have you ever had your back against the wall so badly that if something didn't happen to change your situation, you were sunk? King Hezekiah was one of Israel's greatest godly kings. One of the greatest challenges to his reign came when the king of Assyria threatened to attack Israel and wipe them out. The Assyrians were the local bullies of the region and had wiped out all other enemies in their region.

They mocked the idea of having a God who could save them.

Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you! Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the Lord when he says, "The Lord will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria" (Isaiah 36:14b-15).

The workplace is full of "Assyrian kings" who mock the idea of a living God who delivers. Without God's help, Israel would not overcome. Their backs were against the wall. They would be destroyed.

King Hezekiah saved Israel because of one act. He prayed; and because he prayed, God moved on his behalf. In fact, God moved so powerfully that Hezekiah did not even have to fight the battle.

Then the angel of the Lord went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning, there were all the dead bodies! (Isaiah 37:36)

The king of Assyria was even murdered by his own sons. Imagine seeing your enemy totally destroyed without one hand raised in battle!

God wants to act on behalf of His children if they will call on Him. One of the motives Hezekiah had in seeking God's help was "so that all kingdoms on earth may know that You alone, O Lord, are God" (Is. 37:20). This is what happened. God was glorified.

God wants to let your workplace know that God is a living God. He can deliver. Seek Him today for the crisis in your life. Keep your motive pure and God will surely answer.

                                                                             ###

On Questioning God...

Do not be so self-righteous in thinking that you have never questioned God in your life. We all have done it. "Why here, Lord?" or "Why now?" or "You have ruined me, Lord!"

This section of II Kings I an just going through in my own daily devotions and I have, as I am sure you have, groaned when I read "And he did evil in the sight of the Lord..." when referring to one of the kings.

We all have (or I trust 'have had'!) our own social 'Achilles Heel' in the marketplace. Here you thought you had developed a contracting team of excellence and you get a report that is overheard at a Chamber of Commerce mixer, "I just just don't know about having Bob do this job for us. He's just too, well, religious for my money. I've even heard that he has a local preacher come to the office once a month for some sort of religious service."

The Achilles Heel part comes in when we think, "Well, I'd better down a couple of beers at the mixer.  Wouldn't want my potential customers to think I'm some sort of goodie-goodie and too good for them!"

I like what Charles Stanley writes in his book "Success God's Way" about praying every morning, "Lord, what do You want me to do today?" I'd like to suggest that we take it from the every 'day' mode to every hour. "Is what I am doing right now the best use of my time for my long term goals and God's glory?"  It makes a difference, yes?

Until ALL of our selves is on the Romans 12:1-2 altar, and we do not allow the world to squeeze us into its mold and wiggle off that altar, there is an exciting, fulfilling life our Lord has in store for us!

The Causes of Failure
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman

"You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it." Joshua 7:13b

The first battle for the people of Israel traveling from Egypt was at Jericho, once they crossed the Jordan River. God had given them a great victory at Jericho, and Joshua was now ready to move to their next battle at Ai. After they spied out the enemy camp, they determined they needed only a few thousand men to gain victory.

They went up against Ai only to fail miserably. They lost 32 men in a battle that should have been an easy victory, but instead they were forced to retreat. Joshua was devastated. "Ah, Sovereign Lord, why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us?" (Josh. 7:7a) In this case, the people fell short because they failed to uphold the standard God had set for them. God had told them not to take any plunder from their first battle. However, Achan hid some forbidden treasures, and God was now judging the entire nation for one man's sin.

Whenever we act without God's complete blessing on our activity, we can expect God to thwart our plans. God's word to Joshua was that he could not stand against his enemies as long as there was disobedience among his troops.

Whenever we launch a business endeavor, we should make sure there are no unclean things in our dealings that would allow us to be vulnerable to a failed effort: unpaid vendors, disgruntled employees who were not treated fairly, lawsuits, dishonesty. Many of these things can hinder God from blessing our enterprises. These things can remove the shield of protection from our workplace, which God wants to bless, but cannot because He is committed to upholding righteousness. His name is blemished when unrighteousness is allowed to permeate our lives.

Is the Lord able to bless your enterprises today? If not, you may need to go back and clean up a few things before He can do so. Take whatever steps are needed to ensure the blessing of God today.

The Meaning of "It" in Our Lives

Comments on "Os" above...

Joshua 7:13b in NIV says 'unless you remove it from your midst' and NASV interprets the passage 'unless you remove the things under the ban from your midst.' (Italics mine). As the old Quality Circle movement in business told us rightly, "the devil is in the details.'

So too, Os points out the fact that unless or untill we allow the Lord via the Holy Spirit to shine a light in every nook and cranny of our lives and lifestyle, we should not expect our Lord's blessing upon our endeavor and new business/project launches.

This, to me, is the crux of the entire Christian Life. As one believer on our prayer list in business told me, who is going through his own desert  (black hole or brokenness) experience, "I owe people money. I desperately want to see the Lord bless my life so I might pay them back. But, as I have told my creditors, my current situation allows me to earn just under $400/week currently. That means if I eat no lunches at work and have my wife get a good part time job at her age, not eat out or drive, we can get by."'

I know for a fact that this individual used to charge (and get) close to $250 an HOUR in his 'former' life. Yet he is resigned to this life currently and for as long as the Lord desires, because he (mostly) and his wife have found new energy in their Christian lives because they realize that it is the Lord who is taking them through this desert experience and is using their (mostly his) bad choices from the past as the vehicle. Theirs is no longer a financial 'blessing' but rather a far deeper and richer spirtual blessing.

He has removed 'the things under the ban'--the wrong choices, the idols he had formerly set up that he said he had no clue he was worshiping--until the Lord removed everything else from him. Then, as the days, weeks and months unfolded, more and more 'idols' were removed. And now, he and his wife are waiting paitently before the Lord--and starting over in their late 50's.

Read II Kings 17 (and the chapter around it) to allow your heart to vicariously break for the kings "who did evil in the sight of the Lord and did not follow his father David..." et al so the Lord removed His blessing from them.

I am reminded, painfully, of the time in the early 1980's when I was traveling quite a bit to the West coast and was developing some good business contacts. I latched onto one in Manhattan Beach, CA who was then publishing an employment guide. He had excellent strategy for his publication. We carried on back and forth until one day I wasn't home and Lynda, my wife, took the message from him. She greeted me with "Mr. M called while you were out, Steve. Here's a message from him. I got to speak with him for a few minutes for the first time. Have nothing to do with him!" I said, "Oh Sweetheart, you don't know anything about business so you probably misinterpreted what he said."

I kind of patted her on the head verbally, "He is a very good strategist."  To which she replied, "I'll say it again, have nothing to do with him." End result? It cost me five figures to do business with him.

What or who are the idols in your life that are coming in between you and your closest possible walk with the Savior?  Ask the Lord to send the Holy Spirit as a searchlight into EVERY corner of your life--and then remove whatever and whomever completely from your life as you are prompted. Don't give into the argument with yourself, "This is such a trivial thing..." Just do it.

In His grace,

Steve

Two by Two
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Tuesday, August 05 2008

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work." Ecclesiastes 4:9
Have you discovered yet that you are incomplete by yourself? During my "warrior" stage of life you would have been hard-pressed to convince me that I needed you or anyone else. I know few people willing to admit their need for others, but many who live according to this principle. However, sooner or later we discover God's truth regarding our need for others.

God made us to need others. We may not discover this until we fail - fail in a business, a marriage, a close friendship, or in a client relationship. We are incomplete without the ongoing input from others into our lives. An independent spirit is one of the most detestable sins from God's viewpoint. It is the highest form of pride. "Pride only breeds quarrels, but wisdom is found in those who take advice" (Prov. 13:10).

God has made each of us so that we have only so many gifts. He did not give any of us all the available gifts. Hence, we learn to depend on others and to humbly trust others to complete us where we are deficient.

David had Jonathan. Paul had Silas. John Wesley had George Whitefield. Martin Luther had Philip Melanchthon, who was 14 years younger. Martin Luther learned that he needed someone in his life to complete the work God called him to do. Luther had the greatest respect for this friend who helped him reform the Church of their day, and the Church as we know it at present. Luther learned a great deal from Melanchthon, who was a great scholar at a young age. He could speak several languages, and he became Professor of Greek at the new University of Wittenberg at 21 years of age. This was ten months after Luther posted his famous theses on the church door in Wittenberg. Melanchthon helped shape the Protestant movement of the sixteenth century through his research, writings, moral purpose, and religious conscience. Luther and Melanchthon became inseparable, and when they died, they were buried next to each other.

Who has God placed in your life to complete you? Perhaps it is a mate. Perhaps it is a close friend. Perhaps it is a business partner. If you lack this in your life, I encourage you to seek someone out who can speak into your life. If you have someone like this, tell him or her how much you appreciate the role he or she plays in your life.

Seeing Value in Mentoring
(Thoughts on the above 'Os')
By Steve Lanning

Of course we all should be mentoring one another in our Christian life...whether we are called to business, homemaking or the arts and entertainment or any of the Seven Areas of life. But how?

Our senior pastor at my church really tried to introduce mentoring as a way for the older Christian to pass on to the younger (not necessarily in age). Tentmakers will have some terrific materials on mentoring by Bobb Biehl as we grow.

When I had my association (National Association of Business Coaches), there wasn't the slightest hesitation in looking for or how to be a Mentor in business. I had my own protoges' who in turn had theirs. It was a learning environment to be sure. I continue to have Christian friends who came from membership in NABC--but currently not as a mentor or protoge of another.

Forget age in finding or being a mentor in your seeking. When I was in the "I am a rock, I am an island" stage of life as a  Christian in business years ago (as Os mentioned above), one thing I truly enjoyed was to be in the company of young people who were offspring of missionaries who grew up in a home school or had to go to school on another continent while their parents were missionaries on another. There was real Christian maturity packed in a 18-24-year-old body that could put to shame many of us 'mature in the Lord' types who lived in this culture.

The one thing that sets an individual apart in a coaching or mentoring situation is that both mentor and protoge or coach and coachee had a great desire to learn. And all parties were teachable--or as we used to say coachable. There is so much more  on this that I will save for another occasion.  Who could/should you be mentoring? Who is the Lord bringing to mind?

Being An Overcomer
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Saturday, July 26 2008

"I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33

"Why does it seem that those involved in Christian enterprise find the way so hard? It seems as though it is harder for those who are committed Christians in business. Have you found this to be true?" This was the comment from a business associate recently. My answer was a definite yes. In fact, if you were not a Christian and sought to do a similar business without regard to maintaining a biblical philosophy, the way would be much smoother sailing. It makes us think of the prophet who asked, "Why do the wicked prosper?" (see Jer. 12:1)

It is a spiritual principle of which we speak. When the Israelites crossed the Jordan before they entered the Promised Land, they fought only two battles. Then after they entered the Promised Land, they fought 39 battles. The way of the cross is not paved with lilies; it is paved with grace. When we seek to honor God in our business life, we will be met with opposition from the spiritual forces of this world. This is why each of us must commit ourselves to walking in the power of the Holy Spirit and to be as gentle as doves but as wise as serpents.

Do not be surprised when you find the way harder as a believer than when you were a non-believer. You now have more at stake among the spiritual forces that desire you to be defeated and ineffective.

Stand firm against the evil forces that desire to keep you from walking in freedom in the Promised Land. Jesus is your victory for every battle you will encounter. Call on His name.

On being competitive as a believer in business...
By Steve Lanning

This is a very excellent passage and comment by Os. Jesus told us "In this world you shall [not 'possibly'] have tribulation." This was spoken to all believers in general.  Yet it seems to be universally true for believers in business. I have not come across one Christian in business who has not (or is currently going through) some sort of trial or just crossed a major hurdle in their business.

Now the phrase "those involved in Christian enterprise..." by Os's Christian friend in business is a common mistake we all have make--unless that enterprise is a church or Christ-focused ministry. And even here the term 'Christian enterprise' cannot be used because that would mean that the legal entity, church or ministry, could actually surrender itself and receive Christ as Savior.

Our Lord also told us in Matt 6 that "...the rains fall on the good and the evil..." as does the sun shining on same. A wise football coach told us of a particular team's ferocious defense would be 'meaner' the closer we got to the goal line.

To me, the most astounding item, added as an exclaimation point to Os's devotional, was the fact that the Isrealites fought only 2 battles PRIOR to the Promised Land, but 39 battles (the number of books in our Old Testament--but don't read that much into this number, please) once they entered the 'market' God had preparded for them.

I view the ideas and/or businesses that God gives us as battlegrounds. In earlier years, I thought God did just 'drop' good things into our lap without our having to work for them (I can tell you about a fantastic couple of years in the late 1970s with a certain client that probably spoied me for the next couple of decades spiritually!) But know I know better to 'put on the full armor' of the Lord, be grateful for EVERYthing--because THIS is God's will concerning Steve--and walk in humility before the Lord and people from now on.

For those of us who played football on any level, we know the value of cinching up our pads before going in on a particular play--and the pain (and even dislocated shoulders) when we don't.  How are you making sure you are putting on the 'full armor of God' before you take on the day--and your market?

Finding Meaning in Our Labor
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Thursday, July 24 2008

"But I said, 'I have labored to no purpose; I have spent my strength in vain and for nothing. Yet what is due me is in the Lord's hand, and my reward is with my God.'" Isaiah 49:4

Have you ever felt like you're spending your life using your talent for nothing? Life is often spent doing mundane activities that seem to have little eternal purpose.

The great prophet Isaiah was struggling with his own purpose. He knew he was chosen to be a voice for God, yet life became purposeless for Isaiah. We all go through periods when our purpose seems to be clouded with the mundane. We see little meaning in life. On the other hand, Isaiah didn't stay in this place. We read in this passage that he knew the truth of his existence. He could look past his present circumstance and know that his real reward and purpose would be revealed in eternity. He knew that God was just and fair, so he placed his faith on this truth.

When life appears to lack meaning and purpose, remember that if you devote your life to the purposes He has for you, the fruits of your labor will be manifested in due time. "The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it" (1 Thess. 5:24).

On Our Labor...
By Steve Lanning

"In all labor there is profit" wrote the wisest man to have lived on earth outside of our Lord.

A couple of Father's Days ago, I received a card from our eldest son, married and newly promoted in his profession. His wife, our daughter-in-love, had written her note, and John simply added at the bottom, "Thanks also, Dad, for teaching me how to work."

Of course there was a lump in my throat, but I often thought of all the times when I silently asked myself, "Why am I doing this?" when I was off doing something, I thought, menial for a client. I say this to my shame. Again, until or unless a believer experiences brokenness in their life, real gratefulness has a tough time shining through us.

Of course we have all heard the adage, 'Do something you love and you will never work a day in your life' as to lining up our passions, skills and talents in providing a living for our families.

Some of the best experiences I have enjoyed are with Christian business people--on assignment or simply hanging out in such organizations as the Fellowship of Companies for Christ, International, CBMC and the Gideons and others.

Now my son's note referred to times when we travelled back to Idaho, my home, to see his grandparents and I always seemed to catch when one of my farmer friends was putting up hay or had to do other chores that both our sons could 'enjoy' helping with. I don't have to tell you the smiles were few then, but they see the purpose now!

How many times have we thought of our service a church as a 'no one would miss me' type of service? Friend, we really can 'glorify God in our bodies' by encouraging those we come in contact with our various ministries. Discouragement happens to pastors, Christian workers and believers in business--as well as 'great' prophets of the Lord as we saw with Isaiah.

Let's remember that there is no such thing as 'luck' for the Christian in our daily walk today as we interact with spreadsheets, tough selling situations, poor economy and problem employees; otherwise God would not be soverign! Let's expect to see our Lord working through us today, OK?

God's Selection Process
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, July 16 2008

"So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, 'Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink.'" Judges 7:5
Would you ever take on an army of 100,000 with only 300 men? Sound preposterous? I agree. However, this is exactly what happened with Gideon. It was bad enough that he began with 10,000 against 100,000, but this was too many men according to God. He would not allow Gideon to fight with this many soldiers, because the temptation would still remain to believe that it was the strength of his army that won the victory. God told Gideon to pare down his army to a mere 300. This would ensure that God would receive total credit for the victory. This is a law in the Kingdom of God. All glory must go to Him. "Announce now to the people, 'Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.' So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained" (Judg. 7:3).

Now there are 10,000 men left but that was still too many. God gave Gideon an interesting selection method for the 300 as he took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink" (Judg. 7:5b). What was the significance of this? Those soldiers who lapped water like a dog were soldiers who were more aware of the enemy around them compared to those who kneeled to drink. The lappers were men who were on constant guard to the danger around them, keeping their eyes up and looking about them. The others could be easily picked off.

If you and I are going to be one of God's elite, we must be battle ready. We must be sensitive to the spiritual dangers around us. We must be trained to go about our business while, at the same time, discern when the enemy of our souls is prowling about seeking to destroy us. "Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour" (1 Pet. 5:8). Beware of the spiritual dangers around you.

Commenting on "God's elite"...

By Steve Lanning

Lately, our Lord has been answering our prayer for our two son's...one in California, the other in Florida...who have been blessed with advances in the business careers. While their mother and I are quite happy for them, I believe Os does strike a chord on this 'elite' business.

We are all loved the same under God's nature, that is true. Yet coming back to our "within the measure of the sphere which God apportioned us..." (II Cor 10:13) each of us must bear the weight of pondering, for ourselves and our own lives only, Jusus' Parable of the Talents. How do we know we are giving life all we've got and our 'all is on the alter of sacrifice laid' (as the old hymn of old asks us) and that we are "...self-controlled and alert" to all the opportunities our Lord is laying in our path each day?

Do we really 'love Him because He first loved us?' That is the 'doctrine' of the quality of the few in God's economy (as Joshua discovered) as opposed to doing things as we think they should be done or perhaps the skill sets we have at hand. BTW, IS you all on the altar?

What Inspires You?
Steve Lanning

"The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valor!"
                                                Judges 6:12

When our boys were small, I tried to take occasions to play with them. (Far too few occasions, now looking back.) I was always looking to interject some Scripture into our play--this was after my wife informed me that my 'preaching' had the opposite effect.

We had had a large snowfall one night from a storm and everyone woke up looking at the forecast, "All schools are closed. Most roads are closed. If you do not have to be out, please stay home." I thought it would be a good time to get some writing done for my business. A friend of mine who owns the Quad-State Business Journal had asked me to write a book on business specific for our area, and, again looking back, had I known the time commitment, I would have passed.

"What a great time to get a chunk of writing done," is what went through my mind. "Why don't you go out and play with John and Michael," was the admonition of Lynda my wife. I knew she was right, but I must confess to my shame that I had to get my attitude right first.

We had built tunnels, great mounds of snow and, had a good time.  Usually when small boys get together, they end up fighting some imaginary enemy. My older son, the more reserved and quieter of the two, had climed up on a rock with a make-believe sword in a king-of-the-mountain pose.

"The Lord is with you, John, you mighty man of valor!" is what came out of my mouth.  John just stood in his pose, drinking it all in. And then his younger brother came up to me and asked, "Is the Lord with me, too, Dad?" to which I of course replied in the affirmative. We built Michael a 'mountain' of his own.

It's years later--just a few weeks ago now. Both of our young men have just secured very nice promotions with their respective companies over the last couple of weeks--one in California and the other in Florida. Our 'quiet John' reminded me of a little ditty that sprang from the 'man of valor' occasion that caused him to look a very tough interviewer in the eyes and answer his questions before he was awarded his promotion.

If we can ask the Father to lead us as our head, heart and will have been laid on the altar as a 'living sacrifice' (Romans 12:1-2), we can expect Him to supply just the right inspiration for us to make Him look good in our lives.

Our Work Versus Our Value
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Sunday, July 06 2008

"The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it." Genesis 2:15
Man was created to have seven basic needs. Each of us has a need for dignity, authority, blessing and provision, security, purpose and meaning, freedom and boundary, intimate love and companionship. When we go outside God's provision to meet these needs, we get into trouble.

Every man has a need to work and gain satisfaction in caring and seeing something come from his efforts. Many of our basic needs are derived from our work; it was one of the first acts God did for man in the Garden of Eden. He gave him responsibility to care for and work the Garden. God knew man needed to be productive. He needed to gain satisfaction from his work.

The danger of this is when we allow our work to be our complete source of purpose and meaning in life. This leads to a performance-based life. A performance-based life says, "As long as I perform in my work, I am acceptable to myself and others." This is a subtle trap for all of us. It can lead us to become workaholics if we are seeking acceptance through what we do. Sometimes this can be on a subconscious basis.

Our value must be centered in Christ, not in what we do. If we lose our job or our business, this should not devastate us if we are centered in Him. It will certainly create difficulties, but God is the orchestrator of all the events in our lives for His purposes. Even difficult times have purposes.

Today, ask the Lord if you have a proper balance in your work life. Is Christ the central focus? If you work long hours, ask yourself why. You might discover that God may not be the central focus.

Commenting on Life Value,
By Steve Lanning

If you look at the difference between men and women, as the great 'intellects' at Time Magazine discovered by their cover story a few years back, there really IS a difference between the two sexes. (Yes, I am using the term 'sex' in the correct sense, as it is so often used wrongly.)

The self esteem movement of late has made a big idol out of value. While women can walk into a room with a group of women they have never before met, and in 10 minutes know pretty much everything about them and their families, we men lead with our vocations--secretely trying to 'upstage' the last guy in some way so 'our case' is esteemed more highly.

As Christ has died for us all, as believers, we are all in Christ, therefore all 'one' in Him. Therefore, no one is greater or lesser than the other, but ALL of us who name the name of Christ Jesus are greatly valued by God. After all it is OUR SIN that sent Him to the cross. But as we live in a 'human' world, unless God blesses us with brokenness (yes, I said 'blesses us'--it is horrible to go through be afterwards yields the peaceable fruite of righteousness), we still tend to lord it over the next guy in some way, shape or form.

Os in the article above asked us to consider a 'proper balance' in our lives. While good words, I never really gave anything I did a 100% efforts--I balanced mediocraty in my life. Not the swiftest or best way to go for sure! One pays for it. And now at 61, I am 'reaping the fruit' of not valuing hard consistent work and follow through in my every effort--let alone the seven basic needs he mentioned first.

Our Lord has a unique way in getting our individual attention--because he made each of us. And if we need discipline, He knows just how to bring it into our lives so that it will yield the maximum fruit--eternal fruit--and after all, eternity is the real thing.  This life is simply the warm-up act, yes?

Your Epitaph
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Thursday, July 03 2008

"He will bless those who fear the Lord- small and great alike." Psalm 115:13
What will be written on your epitaph? How do you want people to remember you? What type of legacy will your life leave behind?

I interviewed a very successful and powerful man one time for a magazine when this question came up. The man ran an international business that is a household name to all. He was a professed Christian, but he had difficulty answering my question. "I always knew someone would ask that question some day. I am not sure I am any more prepared to answer it now either," was the man's answer. He grappled for a few nice words, but it was clear he had not seriously considered his life much beyond his business success.

It is said of George Washington Carver that he got up early in the morning each day to walk alone and pray. He asked God how he was to spend his day and what He wanted to teach him that day. Carver grew up at the close of the Civil War in a one-room shanty on the home of Moses Carver - the man who owned his mother. The Ku Klux Klan had abducted him and his mother, selling her to new owners. He was later found and returned to his owner, but his mother was never seen again.

Carver grew up at the height of racial discrimination, yet he had overcome all these obstacles to become one of the most influential men in the history of the United States. He made many discoveries with the use of peanuts and sweet potatoes. However, after he recommended farmers to plant peanuts and sweet potatoes instead of cotton, he was led into his greatest trial. The farmers lost even more money due to the lack of market for peanuts and sweet potatoes. Carver cried out to the Lord, "Mr. Creator, why did You make the peanut?" Many years later, he shared that God led him back to his lab and worked with him to discover some 300 marketable products from the peanut. Likewise, he made over 100 discoveries from the sweet potato. These new products created a demand for peanuts and sweet potatoes, and they were major contributors to rejuvenating the Southern economy.

As he made new discoveries, he never became successful monetarily, but he overcame great rejection during his lifetime for being black. He was offered six-figure income opportunities from Henry Ford, and he became friends with presidents of his day, yet he knew what God had called him to do. His epitaph read:

He could have added fortune to fame, but caring for neither, he found happiness and honor in being helpful to the world."

[John Woodbridge, More Than Conquerors (Chicago, Illinois: Moody Press, 1992), 312.]

This is one you should be spreading to your 'politically correct' friends! Have you ever heard the backgrounder on the life of George Washington Carver before now? An amazing life.

Comments on the above by Steve Lanning

"I have my rights!" is what one lady, an upstanding member of her church, voiced to the committee chair looking to replace her with someone who truly wanted the job--not the prestige that came with it.

My thinking of the subject of 'rights' includes the "lowest level of maturity..." statement by my friend Michael Hensley cited above this heading. The fact is that we as individual believers do NOT HAVE RIGHTS. In fact the only 'rights' we possess is the 'right' to stand before God in the judgment day atoned through the blood of Jesus Christ--and to so live our life here until that time in and through Him.

George Washington Carver is noted often for what he did--not what he did not do. Do people really know that he did NOT take a $100,000 job fromm Henry Ford (and many other amenities from a host of people who could give him both fame and fortune)? Remember, $100,000 in those days would be akin to $2,000,000 a year today.

Demanding my rights is in my history, too, I sadly confess. But the humbling of the Lord is a blessed thing. At first I was angry in seeing people, Christians included--no matter what the color of their skin--demand what they deemed as 'their rights' as they went off in righteous indignation. Now, I feel sorry for them.

I get feeling bad for America, particularly during this 4th of July, and how the word patriotism is being morphed into something the Founding Fathers would not even recognize. Left is right, right is wrong, up is down and wrong is right in these turbulent times. Yet we have been there before and our Lord has always been faithful. I, too, believe that America is "the shining city on a hill" and it got that way through God's blessing. I love America.  But look around the next time you are singing the Star Spangled Banner and see how many have their hand over their heart or are even singing or even standing respectfully.  Now, if you have the opportunity to attend a sporting event or any event where our neighbors to the north sing "O Canada!" note how virtually EVERYONE is participating, how enthusiastically they sing; how proud they are of their country.

You see, nationalism is not a dirty word. It is NOT wrong but very RIGHT to be proud of your country. You can be proud of your country, I can be proud of mine. The next time someone criticizes America, remember the life of George Washiington Carver and the tens of thousands even millions of people who are benefited because he lived in America--and trusted the Lord to work in and through him to bless others--in spite of the KKK and attitudes at that time.  Think of any other country that when a disaster strikes, is the first one to offer their resources in such abundance. Think of all the other 'George Washington Carvers' in the world who may be just as creative as 'the origial George' in this country, but because of their political systems and/or leaders do not have a chance of succeeding the way 'the original George' has in this country.

 Living for a Greater Cause
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, July 02 2008

"I can do everything through Him who gives me strength." Philippians 4:13
What does it mean for workplace believers to live for a cause greater than themselves in our day and time? Jeremiah Lanphier was a businessman in New York City who asked God to do this in his life in 1857.

In a small, darkened room, in the back of one of New York City's lesser churches, a man prayed alone. His request of God was simple, but earth-shattering: "Lord, what wilt Thou have me to do?" [John Woodbridge, ed., More Than Conquerors (Chicago, Illinois: Moody Press, 1992), 337]

He was a man approaching midlife without a wife or family, but he had financial means. He made a decision to reject the "success syndrome" that drove the city's businessmen and bankers. God used this businessman to turn New York City's commercial empire on its head. He began a businessmen's prayer meeting on September 23, 1857. The meetings began slowly, but within a few months 20 noonday meetings were convening daily throughout the city. The New York Tribune and the New York Herald issued articles of revival. It had become the city's biggest news. Now a full-fledged revival, it moved outside New York. By spring of 1858, 2,000 met daily in Chicago's Metropolitan Theatre, and in Philadelphia the meetings mushroomed into a four-month long tent meeting. Meetings were held in Baltimore, Washington, Cincinnati, Chicago, New Orleans, and Mobile. Thousands met to pray because one man stepped out. Annus Mirabilis, the year of national revival, had begun.

This was an extraordinary move of God through one man. It was unique because the movement was lead by businessmen, a group long considered the least prone to any form of evangelical fervor, and it had started on Wall Street, the most unlikely of all places to begin.

Could God do something extraordinary through you? Take a step. Ask God to do mighty things through you.

Well, what about today and me and you?

What are WE doing to advance the cause of Christ on the shop floor, office or in our own daily activities. Taking a surrendered heart, putting it completely on the Romans 12:1-2 altar before our Lord and asking, "What do you want ME to do, Lord?" is a giant first step.

No matter the ministry tugging at your heart right now, the reason we are asking you to help us get the "How the Bible Came to Us" DVD--and the seminar "The Miracle that Is Your Bible" or the more 'acceptable by public schools' title "The History of the Bible' out to every nook and cranny of society is that we want to launch a movement. A real movement that rekindles an interest in God's word--first, by the pew packers who sit in our churches Sunday after Sunday, then to everyone else. A movement that tells the truth about America's founding fathers and what THEY thought about the Bible. Will you join us?

Just click on How We Got the Bible and get the DVD into every nook and cranny in your community first, OK? Make it a Sunday School class project. Remember, the libraries and schools will not reject this DVD because it is classified as 'History'.

Starting with believers, let's covet to build our foundation back into our local churches, first, OK?
OK! I look forward to hearing from you!

In His marvelous grace,

Steve Lanning

P.S. Well, it is not 'daily' yet, but we are getting better than once a week, right? Thanks for your support, my friend.

Settling Disputes
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Sunday, June 29 2008

"Casting the lot settles disputes and keeps strong opponents apart." Proverbs 18:18
We prayed about it. We discussed it. My friend had one desire; I had a different one.

"Okay, let's settle the issue the way the early Church settled matters when an agreement could not be achieved. Let's flip a coin."

"You must be joking!" my friend lamented.

"No, the early Church cast lots often to determine a course of direction or even select the disciple who would take Judas' place."

"Okay," my friend agreed.

We flipped the coin and the matter was quickly settled.

In the Old Testament there are many examples of casting lots for determining a decision. We hear little of this method today. Most of us do not want to release the decision process to this seemingly "flippant" process; yet the Lord says, "The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord" (Prov. 16:33).

Flipping a coin is the equivalent to casting a lot. It removes our own opinions and leaves the final outcome to the Lord. Pray before you take such an action. It will surprise you who is willing to submit a decision to the Lord and who isn't. It removes the element of control from both parties.

I believe the Lord would first have us make decisions through agreement and continued prayer for the decision. However, there are times when this approach can be the quickest and simplest. It removes each person's temptation to lord it over the other. Cast the lot and settle the dispute.

                                                                                    ###

My comments on the above...

Os sets up an interesting dispute-settling process. The 'take-away' would be his next to last line: "I believe the Lord would first have us make decisions through agreement and continued prayer for the decision."  But then there always the 'Bibical' process of flipping a coin, right?

This is something else entirely different from the above. About 2 years ago in my position as a SCORE (the 'how to start a business' arm of the Small Business Administration) counselor, I counseled an older Vietnamese lady from across the Potomac in Martinsburg, WV. Jackie W. was married to a retired official from the U.S. State Department, had had her own beauty salon, but came to me wanting to "start a business so that I could help people" she told me.

Unusual, yes. SCORE gets all kinds. As we are all volunteers, SCORE is to my mind the best bang for the tax-payer's buck going as to being a government agency in giving the U.S. a net-positive gain for the economy.

Jackie had probably the worst business plan I had ever witnessed in all my years as a SCORE volunteer. Basically, she had no business plan and really couldn't explain herself much better--except out of our three sessions, I found out she had computer problems and was able to hook her up with a Vietnamese IT guy who worked for a local company--who spoke Vietnamese quite well as his mother was still living with him. Otherwise, I had tried to witness the best way I could, but I came away with the though that I was floundering at best. It seemed more than difficult communications.

That was about two years ago. Jackie dropped out of site. I had given her my cell phone number for our sessions and I tried to follow up several times, even leaving messages with her English-speaking husband to no avail. I thought I had offended Jackie in some way.

Then YESTERDAY, my cell rings and it is Jackie W. She told me that she had a bout with thyroid cancer and she had almost died. She was calling "because she knew me to be a man of God" that she knew it from our first meeting. Huh? I told her that I would be praying for her.

Then she said, "When I get better, I will come with you to your church--wherever it is. You see, I am a Buddist but I know that you know God..."  Scripture says that when we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word, we give off the sweet-smell of Jesus.

I took down her new phone number and I promised to check up on her. I just sat in my chair. I was floored.  It was quite a birthday present to me from the Lord.

 Remaining Vertical With God
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Thursday, June 26 2008

"When they hurled their insults at Him, He did not retaliate; when He suffered, He made no threats. Instead, He entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly." 1 Peter 2:23
Have you ever been wrongfully accused? Oh, the need to defend and justify becomes so great. "What will people think if they believe these things are true?" we reason. Imagine what Jesus thought as they hurled insults and threats upon Him. The God of the universe had visited planet earth only to be slandered and accused of blasphemy.

Jesus could have done two things in response. He could have used His power to put the people in their place. He could have responded "horizontally." He could have fixed the problem right then. However, He chose to respond in a different way. He chose to "entrust Himself to Him who judges justly." It requires great faith to entrust ourselves to God in the midst of personal assault. However, if we can do this, we will discover a level of grace and wisdom that will be birthed from this experience that we never thought possible. We will discover a freedom in God we never knew before. Whenever we suffer for righteousness without seeking to protect our reputation and rights, we are placing our total faith in the one who can redeem us. This activates God's grace in our lives and enables us to experience God's presence like never before.

Ask God to give you the grace to stay vertical with Him. Avoid the temptation of responding horizontally each time some event comes into your life that you want to "fix." Entrust yourself to the one who judges justly. It may be a divine appointment for your growth to another level in grace.

                                                                            ###
Just a Lanning Note on the Above...

Many times we are 'forced' to 'entrust' ourselves to our Lord--because we have no other place to go. I have found that in my own life, in those times when I fall before the Lord on the altar, the Holy Spirit provides a wonderful, unclassifiable peace that passes human understanding. It is not a perfectly congruent analogy but as my pastor has sometimes said when describing faith, "If God doesn't come through, I'm sunk!"  On second thought, it is an apt comparision. Trials give us as believers what I call 'forced faith' because we either believe God--or we don't. We either try to muddle through on our own, with our own skillsets and 'ingenuity' leading often to less than desireable results--or throw ourselves totally, completely and unashamedly upon our Lord. Why does it often seem to take a severe trial to bring someone to put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ? Same thing with us 'mature' believers. We pack pews on Sunday, live our lives Monday through Saturday and do not change--unless or until our Lord interrupts our life with a trial and gives us an opportunity to 'entrust ourselves' completely to Him.

Yesterday my neighbor, a long-haul truck driver, was told by his boss whom he had worked for for many years, to park the truck he was driving as he was going out of business due to the high cost of fuel; that my neighbor Jim no longer had a job.

As a non-Christian, this gives Jim and his wife (also a non-believer) a full-fledged crisis. And it gives my wife and I, as believing neighbors, hopefully the opportunity to again show that by entrusting themselves to the same Creator God who is concerned about a sparrow's well-being, He can indeed guide their life decisions. (You may pray about that goal of the Kingdom, OK? Thanks.)

"When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!"
"While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey."

My God Shall Provide
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, June 25 2008

"And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:19
Have you ever gone through a time of complete dependence on God for your material needs? Perhaps you lost a job and could not generate income on your own. Perhaps you got sick and could not work. There are circumstances in our lives that can put us in this place.

When God brought the people of Israel out of Egypt through the desolate desert, they had no ability to provide for themselves. God met their needs supernaturally each day by providing manna from Heaven. Each day they would awake to one day's portion of what they needed. This was a season in their lives to learn dependence and the faithfulness of God as provider. By and by, they entered the Promised Land. When they did, God's "supernatural provision" was no longer required. "The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan" (Josh. 5:12). In both cases God was the provider of the need.

For most of us, we derive our necessities of life through our work. Like the birds of the fields we are commanded to go out and gather what God has already provided. It is a process of participation in what God has already provided. Sometimes it appears it is all up to us; sometimes it appears it is all up to God. In either case we must realize that the Lord is our provider; the job is only an instrument of His provision. He requires our involvement in either case.

"You may say to yourself, 'My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.' But remember the Lord your God, for it is He who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms His covenant, which He swore to your forefathers, as it is today" (Deuteronomy 8:17-18).

Acknowledge the Lord as the provider of every need you have today. He is a faithful provider.

Comments by Steve Lanning

This is a familiar verse--maybe too familiar.  Only those of us who have had to enlist our spouse's help to look under sofa cushions, on the car floor, in pants pockets and in old purses--all the gain $1.86 for bread will know the deep meaning of "Our God will supply all your needs..."

Yet it is still true...God really does provide. Yes, too often those of us who have needed skillsets of engineering, surgical skills, nursing skills, marketing, accounting and so on and so on will think, 'hey, I depend on my skillset'. I therefore worship at the altar of my skills.

Yet God does have very unique ways of getting our attention, doesn't He? You have read it here. How many of us have thought or even said out loud, "I don't know what is going on. I am doing everything the same way as last year, but nothing is happening. Zilch! Zero, Nada. What is going on?"

In his book on Brokenness, Lon Solomon tells us that we all will go through this kind of black hole period--according to the working of God's will in our lives. But what about God wanting me happy, healthy, rich and handsome? Did I not hear preachers promise me this when I gave more to their cause? Of course maybe they should ask the poor Chinese Christians--in China, Vietnam and Burma and elsewhere--about how rich they are. They will tell you that they indeed are rich. It's just not in the currency preachers here in the US promise!

Surrender now to personalize and pray Col 1:9-12 as we glorify the Lord--today--the only day we have available to us right now.

Faithfulness in Our Calling
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Wednesday, June 18 2008

"He went out to meet Asa and said to him, 'Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The Lord is with you when you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.'" - 2 Chronicles 15:2

Asa was the king of Judah from 912-872 B.C. He reigned for 41 years and was known as a good king who served the Lord with great zeal. He reformed many things. He broke down idol worship to foreign gods; he put away male prostitutes and even removed his own mother from being queen because she worshiped an idol. The Scriptures say that as long as he sought the Lord, the Lord prospered his reign.

However, Asa was not totally faithful in his calling. There came a time in his life when he made a decision to no longer trust in the God of Israel. He lost his confidence in God as his deliverer. The prophet Hanani came to Asa to inform him that God's blessing was no longer on his life because of an ungodly alliance he had made.

Were not the Cushites and Libyans a mighty army with great numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on the Lord, He delivered them into your hand. For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war (2 Chronicles 16:8-9).

There are no guarantees that if we began well we will finish well. The life of Asa tells us this. It is only through God's grace that we can be faithful to our calling. Each of us is capable of falling away from God. Pray that God will keep you faithful to the purposes He has for your life. He strengthens those whose hearts are fully committed to Him.

Comments on Today's TGIF

At Tentmakers, we strive to have our members giving life all they've got in employing their spiritual gifts in focusing on their own 'sphere' as per II Cor 10:13. We feel this is a foundational verse (in the NASB and NKJV versions) because our calling is dependent upon our own sphere.  We can be inspired to fill in our sphere as we listen to Billy Graham or hear the backgrounders of Christians in business such as Truett Cathy (Chick-fil-A) and many others. And we can aspire to be like them--within our sphere. But we cannot duplicate them. We must strive to be all we can be IN THE LORD fully surrendered with 'clean hands' (ie clear consciences in everything) "within the measure of the sphere"--each responsible for his or her own filling throughout life until eternity.

One of the reasons we even have a TEAM 1000 (giving out, selling, value-adding to a product or service at least one (1) How We Got the Bible DVD per month) and a Centurian Club (giving out, selling, value-adding to a product or service at least 10 (ten) copies of the DVD per month) is because we each must grow "...within the measure (breadth, depth, etc) of the sphere which God has apportioned us...(NASB) and that growth must be founded upon the Bible.

Note: It is a sad state of our current society when a non-believer could read words and phrases such as 'the Word of God' or 'Scriptures' or 'God's holy Word'--and what comes to mind is New Age literature, cult literature or someone's opinion, isn't it? Thus, as there is only one Bible, we keep repeating the word Bible mostly in hopes of clarifying things in the cultural eyes of the unbeliever.

Finishing well...those words have a nice ring to them. Not only King Asa but many of us as Christians in business have a tough time finishing well. That is why we have the DVD as a constant goal and hence the Bible as a constant focus. As a distance runner back in high school (those who see me now have to take those words by faith!), I trained to have a nice 'kick' on the final half lap whether it was the fourth or eighth time around a quarter-mile track. But in order to have that 'kick' mean something as to getting points for the team, it meant that I had to run a 'clean' race, that I was at or close to the front of the majority of other runners.

Yet as Christians we do not compete against other believers. God certainly does not stand over us with "Look at Billy Graham, Steve. You are falling way short in your life. You have a hard time just giving a speech let alone preach like this man! C'mon, get with the program!"  That is where we must pay attention to our own 'sphere' our own calling, our own spiritual gifting because in our Lord's economy, His rewards are based on the talents He has given us--and only us. Hence, we are responsible for only, you guessed it, ourselves and the attached responsibilities, talents, gifts, trials and opportunities our Lord blesses us with. So I can cheer on others in my church who have, according to me, broader talents and skill sets than I and not have a twinge of envy in my body.

Stay in the Word (the Bible), stay with others (your church) who have like goals to make God look good in their lives and honor and glorify Him, exercise your gifts, grow as large as you can and alway possess a thankful and grateful heart to Him.

Disobedience Rooted in Fear
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Friday, June 06 2008

"Then Moses said to them, 'No one is to keep any of it until morning.'" - Exodus 16:19
Have you ever seen God do something really good in your life only to find that you have abused the blessing He gave you? Such was the case of the Israelites as they were traveling through the desert on their way to the Promised Land. God was providing for them in miraculous ways. Manna was provided each day as their bread. God gave Moses specific instructions as to how this manna was to be eaten. God said each one was to gather only what he needed for that day. No one was to keep it until the next morning.

"However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them" (Ex. 16:20). God was teaching the Israelites daily trust in His provision for them. He wanted them to trust Him one day at a time. If they tried to hoard, God put a self-destruct feature in the manna. Yet God also told them to gather two days' worth on the sixth day so that they would have manna to eat on the seventh day. Interestingly, this manna did not stink or have maggots.

For many years I gathered manna in business out of fear of not having enough. One day, the Lord decided that manna should be destroyed in order for me to learn total trust in His provision. When we operate out of fear, we can expect the Lord to lovingly discipline us in order to help us learn to trust Him. There is a danger when we seek to "insure ourselves" against calamity. If your actions are born from fear, you can expect God to demonstrate His loving reproof so that you might not live in fear.

Commentary on Today's TGIF

In selling, we are told that there are three items all prospects share in common--fear, need and greed. Identify and sell to the one item that the prospect in front of you possesses and your sales will enjoy fruitfulness.

The interesting thing to me is that the same three items are also known as great motivators--for better or worse. "If a man will not work, neither let him eat" Scripture tells us.

How is the Lord enabling you to trust Him one day at a time? This may take some pondering as many believers in business have to think hard about exactly what the Lord is providing them. Of course this is sad. I know what you are thinking because many Christians in business are at the top of their game. They are excellent in all they do. Hence it is their excellence that supplies their daily needs. Oh, for sure, they wouldn't be caught dead saying that, but that is there framework, "See what great things my hand has provided...I will build larger barns..."

This is why Tentmakers encourages others to not only view but take the DVD and/or How We Got the Bible Seminar to others. This keeps instilling the awe we all should carry with us at all times when we read and/or promote the Scriptures.

Ultimately, this is not a "How much is enough" sermon. That is not us by a long shot. We believe that  we all should 'fill in' our sphere (II Cor 13:10) with all the energy and creativity within us. If we have a positive, legal and ethical business that is serving people, and we are surrendered to the Lord in our lives and all we do, why not put the pedal to the metal?

But Os asks a penetrating question...in whom or what do we really trust? I mean really trust--not merely give lip service to. Are we building our 401K 'barns' or investing in eternity--including holding the ropes of others--who are harvesting souls?

Effective Leadership
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1 by Os Hillman
Thursday, June 05 2008

"And when the Israelites saw the great power the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in Him and in Moses His servant." - Exodus 14:31
What makes an effective Christian leader today? Is it charisma? Is it ability? Is it communication and oratory skills? God's view of an effective leader has nothing to do with these qualities. They may be a part of an effective leader. However, the core attribute of a Christian leader is his integrity with God and his obedience to follow Him. When this happens, God manifests His power in and through that leader. Moses was effective because he was willing to obey the commands God gave him. When Moses did this, God manifested His presence in him. The result was that people followed. They followed because they saw God working in and through the man. They saw that this man was worthy of following because God's anointing was on him.

When people see the Lord's power manifested in your life, they will have a healthy fear of the Lord. They will look at you and say, "This person has something I don't have that is worthy of more investigation." Your challenge is to seek the Lord with a whole heart, resulting in God's power being manifested in the daily activities of your life. When this happens, you can expect others to be drawn to what they see in you. The problem with many Christians today is that non-Christians see nothing different about the way they live to motivate the unsaved to desire their faith.

What makes you different from your neighbor? Is your experience with God noticeably different from that of the man next door? If you're not experiencing regular encounters with God, it's time to ask why not. We don't live day-to-day for the next spiritual experience, but we should see by-products of a life centered in God that is reflected in fruit from His presence in our lives
                                                                                           ###

Follow up discussion:

We have all bought more books than we have read on effective business leadership. Os uses the phrase "...integrity with God and his obedience to follow Him" when describing the effective leadership of Moses. How does this square with your business behavior? With the business behavior in those you admire?

To what degree do you agree with this statement:
"When people see the Lord's power manifested in your life, they will have a healthy fear of the Lord..."

Is this our quest: "...to seek the Lord with a whole heart..."?
We will look to post some of your comments later on!

Until next time...
Steve
